What Is Ready Mix Concrete?

Ready mix concrete is prepared according to a set mix design in a plant instead of a job site. Manufacturers mix sand, gravel, cement, and water, then deliver the mixture to the site, depending on the project requirement. Ready mix concrete is delivered in two ways—transit-mix concrete and shrink-mix concrete. With transit-mix concrete, the mixing process takes place inside the truck transporting the concrete. The concrete is partially mixed while in transit, and the full mixing takes place once it reaches its destination.

Mixing concrete in this manner prevents it from hardening during transit. By contrast, shrink-mix is partially mixed at the plant before being transported. Like transit-mix concrete, shrink-mix concrete is only fully mixed once it reaches the worksite. However, this type of mixing allows more concrete to be transported at once.

The character of concrete is determined by the quality of the paste. The strength of the paste, in turn, depends on the ratio of water to cement. The water-cement ratio is the weight of the mixing water divided by the weight of the cement. High-quality concrete is produced by lowering the water-cement ratio as much as possible without sacrificing the workability of fresh concrete. Generally, using less water produces a higher quality concrete provided the concrete is properly placed, consolidated and cured.
